The artist

“I spent a long time looking for the right artist to illustrate my Magical Mister Mishkins books,” explains author Samantha Mattocks. “In my mind, I knew how I wanted the illustrations to look – or rather, not look. I didn’t want comic style, I didn’t want coloured pencil, and I didn’t want anything garish.

“It was while I was looking that I was followed on Instagram, both at my own account and that of Mishkins, by Gerda Smit. The moment I looked at her art, I knew 100^% that she was the right person to illustrate my books.”

“Gerda truly brought Mister Mishkins’ Apothecary to life, and I was incredibly moved when I received the below from her about the book”, finishes Samantha.

From Gerda

“It’s as though Mister Mishkins himself appeared in my life at the exact moment I needed him most.

“Samantha Mattocks’ magical cat, with his uncanny ability to find those who require him, seemed to step out of the pages and into my world when she entrusted me with the opportunity to illustrate his story.

“Much like the people who visit Mister Mishkins’ apothecary, I found myself transformed – my fears replaced or magic, my self-doubt replaced by a quiet confidence, and my artistic journey infused with a sprinkling.

“Illustrating the first book in the Mister Mishkins series wasn’t just a project; it was a year-long adventure that became part of my heart. I felt as though I went into his apothecary myself. I connected so deeply with this enchanting character and his world that when the book was complete, I felt an almost tangible loss. For nearly a year, a photograph of Mister Mishkins remained my phone’s screensaver – a comforting reminder of a story that had given me so much.

“Samantha’s words and her belief in my ability to bring them to life unlocked something in me I didn’t realise I needed. Her trust opened doors to new possibilities, allowing me to grow as an illustrator and to adapt to creating for diverse stories and voices.

“The idea of illustrating a second book fills me with pure joy. To return to Mosaic Street and work once again with Samantha and Mister Mishkins feels like revisiting an old friend – a comforting, magical reunion that reminds me why I love what I do. Samantha gave me far more than she’ll ever know, and it’s an honour to continue illustrating the magic of Mister Mishkins.”
